Adult Onset Asthma

Asthma is thought of as a childhood disease, and for the most part it is. There is a chance that the disease may start once adulthood is reached. According to a CNN interview of Dr. Ashok Patel by CNN after reaching adulthood a person has a one in ten chance of developing asthma.

According to a report by the Department of Health and Human Services "Occupational asthma, or the new onset of asthma due to conditions at the workplace, has become the most common occupational lung disease" Source.

There is a greater chance that adult onset asthma is nonatopic in nature, meaning that things like emotion, exercise and some medicines like aspirin may cause an attack.

According to a study by Finnish researchers smoking is a cause of asthma in adults. Source

Asthma may often be diagnosed as another disease such as COPD or Chronic Bronchitis. Source
