Several things may cause a child to have an increased risk for developing asthma. They can be divided into those risk factors that are preventable and those that the child or his care givers cannot do anything about.

Preventable Risk Factors:
Allergen Exposure
Tobacco Exposure
Outdoor and Indoor Air Pollution
Occupational Exposure

Non-preventable Risk Factors
Genetics
History of atopic dermatitis or eczema
Viral Infections
Airway Size
